Secure

Welcome to Ledger Security

The smartest way to secure, buy, exchange, and grow your crypto assets.

Welcome to the Ledger ecosystem. Ledger hardware wallets (Nano S Plus, Nano X, and Stax) provide the highest level of security for your cryptocurrency assets by keeping your private keys offline. Unlike software wallets connected to the internet, Ledger devices isolate your sensitive data from potential online threats, hackers, and malware.

By choosing Ledger, you are taking ownership of your financial freedom. This guide will walk you through every step necessary to initialize your device, secure your recovery phrase, and start managing your portfolio with confidence. Whether you are a crypto novice or a seasoned investor, proper setup is crucial for long-term security.

Web3 Ready

Step-by-Step

How to Set Up Your Ledger

Follow these 6 essential steps to initialize your device safely.

01

Unbox Your Ledger Device

Verify the contents of your package. It should include the Ledger device, a USB cable, recovery sheets, and a keychain strap.

  • Check that the box was sealed and not tampered with.
  • Ensure the recovery sheets are blank.
02

Install Ledger Live

Download the official companion app for your desktop or mobile device. This is the interface you will use to manage your assets.

  • Available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
  • Only download from the official ledger.com website.
03

Set Up Your Device

Connect your Ledger to your computer. Navigate through the on-screen instructions to initialize as a new device.

  • Choose a PIN code (4 to 8 digits).
  • Avoid simple sequences like 1234 or 0000.
04

Write Down Recovery Phrase

Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase. This is the master key to your funds. Write it down on the recovery sheet.

  • CRITICAL: Never take a photo or type it on a computer.
  • Verify each word carefully during the confirmation step.
05

Install Apps

Open the "My Ledger" tab in Ledger Live to install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).

  • Apps allow the device to calculate private keys.
  • Uninstalling apps does not delete your coins.
06

Add Accounts & Start

Once the app is installed on the device, add an account in Ledger Live to start receiving and sending funds.

  • Click "Add Account" in the Portfolio tab.
  • Verify your receiving address on the device screen.
Software

Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the all-in-one app to buy, sell, swap, and grow your crypto while securing it with your hardware wallet.

Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Mobile (iOS, Android)

System Requirements:

Windows 10+, macOS 10.14+, Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+), iOS 13+, Android 8.1+

Device Activation

Connecting your device is the first step to security. Use the provided USB cable for Nano S Plus. For Nano X, you can use USB or Bluetooth for mobile.

PIN Code Security

Your PIN code is the first line of defense. It prevents unauthorized physical access to your device.

  • Set a PIN between 4-8 digits
  • Device wipes after 3 wrong attempts
  • Never share your PIN with anyone

Recovery Phrase Security

Your 24-word recovery phrase (Secret Recovery Phrase) is the only backup of your private keys. If you lose your device, this phrase restores your funds.

WARNING: Ledger will NEVER ask for your 24 words. Never enter them into any website or app.

Storage Rules

  • Write on the physical recovery sheet
  • Store in a fireproof/waterproof safe
  • NEVER take a digital photo

Firmware Updates

Keeping your device firmware up to date is critical for security and new feature access. Ledger regularly releases updates to patch vulnerabilities and support new blockchains.

How to update:
  1. Connect your device to Ledger Live on Desktop.
  2. Look for the blue notification banner in "My Ledger".
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.
  4. Never disconnect during an update.
